National Masturbation Month

Aside from Kaamatan, birthdays and anniversaries, what else is going on in the month of May? It’s National Masturbation Month!

Wait? What? Wanking month? I know how you feel. That was my reaction when I knew this month is dedicated to wanking. How did it started?

It all goes back in 1995 where National Masturbation Day is celebrated on May 7th every year with the purpose of protecting the right to masturbate. And alongside NMD, the month of May is celebrated as the National Masturbation Month (Wikipedia).

It began at San Francisco, California after U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders commented on the subject which ended her career. Good Vibrations, San Francisco’s sex toy and education company decided to find a way to keep the focus on Elders’ unjust firing, and to bring talk about masturbation into the mainstream in just the way Elders had envisioned (Blog). Even so, the American government didn’t recognize this event for sure, it’s not celebrated here in Malaysia. ;P

How to celebrate? Masturbate-a-thon of course! What is the significance of a masturbate-a-thon?  It is a fundraising event where people ask for pledges (dollar amount per minute) and on a specific day try to masturbate as long as they possibly can (About). And where does the money go to? Well, during the past six years, Masturbate-a-thon has raised over $25,000 for women’s health initiatives and HIV prevention, education and treatment organizations, and has contributed to debates about safer sex and alternative safe methods of sexual expression (Wikipedia).

So what’s the benefit of National Masturbation Month? “I think it is something that is part of human sexuality and a part of something that perhaps should be taught.” – Elders (EmpowHer). Aside from that, the nature of masturbation which doesn’t require a partner (though in some situation, someone gets a hand job from another person) makes it the safest form of sex that can prevent someone from contracting sexually transmitted disease such as HIV, herpes, chlamydia, syphilis and many more. Perhaps, prevent unwanted pregnancy which results in improper disposals of newborn infant that we read in our local paper.

And whether you realize it or not, masturbation is actually beneficial to both men and women. According to Men’s Health masturbation can:

  • Prevent prostate cancer
  • Increase immunity
  • Boost one’s mood
  • Makes a man  last longer and harder

Apart from that, it fights premature ejaculation and no worries bro, masturbation won’t make you blind! As for women, it can:

  • Prevent urinary tract and cervical infections
  • Improves cardiovascular functioning and lowering risk of type-2 diabetes
  • Stronger pelvic floor
  • Natural cure for insomnia
  • Stress buster

Read more details about it at Divine Caroline. And there are many other benefits that we can gain from masturbating. Just Google for medical essays/journals, health forums/websites that discuss about the topic.

Masturbation itself is harmless and there are no proven long-term physical issues with moderate masturbation habits. However, we can all experience some side effects, whether they are short-term, long-term or related to chronic masturbation habits – Ask Men.

How to masturbate? Hold your horses people. Sorry to disappoint you but I’m not going further on how to masturbate. 😀

By now, I know some of you find the idea of masturbating is still taboo because of our eastern values and cultures where we hold our religion and the topic of masturbation is rarely spoken about, but to have that positive knowledge about masturbation, in my opinion, won’t do any harm. Read  more about religious views on masturbation here.

By writing this entry, I’m not encouraging you to take off your pants and get into action, but my intention is to share the knowledge and information that I’ve got.

Now, what ever your views or opinions on masturbation, the decision is in your hands, which involves common sense that takes all facts and information into consideration thus deciding whether to masturbate or not.

Nevertheless, Happy National Masturbation Month! And try not to get caught like this guy here.
